Last week a beautiful creative co-lab came to life: a co-lab facilitated by Pepsi, between two of the coolest young Danish musicians from two very different genres; ELOQ and ANYA. The two were given a challenge – they were to create a track in no more than 48 hours.

I have had the pleasure of doing a small Q&A with one of them; namely Danish singer ANYA, who recently released her EP ‘The Credit’ and whom I admire very much, to talk a bit about the challenging task she and ELOQ were given, and about what inspires her and her musical universe.

Hi ANYA! First of all I would like to say that I think your sound is amazing! Let me just ask you to begin with: When did your interest in music begin?

I come from a home in which music played a big part. I have older siblings who all played music and they would practice the piano in the evening – and when my mom put me to sleep I would always lie awake and listen to the music.
When I became a teenager I sort of found and created my own sound. Music has always been essential in my life. I would never sit down and paint or play sports like my friends did, I would just sit around and listen to weird jazz. I have always been fascinated by some of the iconic women in jazz as they have so much melancholy in their voices. I am especially very fascinated by the way that Ella Fitzgerald and Josephine Baker sing – they have both been very influential in my process of making my own music and finding my own musical style.

What is the most important thing for you, when it comes to your music?

When I sit down at a piano and write a song I do not aim to write something that fits inside a certain “genre box”, but when I write music by the piano it always automatically develops into something within the Soul and R&B genre. I try to focus on creating a vibe or a mood within the listener. I am very fascinated by that myself – about how a song can create a certain feeling. I am very fascinated by writers and musicians who are able to make very minimalistic songs, that are still very powerful and are able to move something within me.

What does it mean for you to be able to challenge yourself and take your music to new levels and share it with people?

This challenge came in an absolutely perfect time for me. I recently released my new EP and I am trying to figure out where I am going with my music, and what my sound is going to be and ELOQ has been a huge inspiration for me in trying to figure this out.

One of the best things was that none of us felt that we had to compromise. We kind of succeeded in merging each of our styles and sounds into the track. I was so happy to get a chance to work with ELOQ, as I have followed him for the past years and I am a big fan of him and his music. When we had finished the challenge I asked my boyfriend: “Can you believe that I did a song with ELOQ??” because it seems so surreal.

The two of you were placed in a cabin for 48 hours in which you had to create a new track together. Can you briefly describe the process within your co-lab with ELOQ? How did it start? How was it? Are you happy with the result?

I think one of the most vital interesting things about the work process was to figure out that we clicked on a personal level – we quickly developed a friendship, and this was really essential for the further process. I am rather new within the music game, so it is very important to me that I like the people that I work with. This was essential in us making something sufficient and satisfying. ELOQ works with his music in a way that is very refreshing and playful, which was very inspiring to me. I think that women can sometimes worry too much and think too much about whether people will like what they do or not – sometimes men are better to believe in themselves and just do things without thinking too much about what other thinks. This is also one of the reasons why it was very great for me to work with ELOQ – he knows that the things he does are the best so he will do it whether people like it or not – the most important thing for him is that he likes what he does. This inspired me a lot.

I feel so confident about the track. I am really, really pleased with the result and I cannot wait for people to listen to this mixture of the two of us and the whole constellation of these two very different sounds.

What does this creative co-lab with ELOQ mean to you?

The co-lab with ELOQ has been a great inspiration to me. His carefree style have really inspired me to challenge myself and try not to think too much about what other things and rather just do what I believe and what I think is great.

One of the great privileges of being a singer is that you are able to shift in between different musical universes. I can do something in this electronic universe and then I can go back to my own jazzy universe. This is definitely one of the things that I love about being a musician.

What is your definition of the track you made together?

It is definitely the closest to making a “banger” I’ve ever been. I hope that I can work with ELOQ a lot more in the future. This genre is definitely very appealing to me – it is the genre that I listen to when I am getting ready for a night out and it is really great and refreshing.

Thank you so much!
